  • 2018 LAWPRO Report to Convocation

  • Pay your 2017 premiums on or before February 7, 2017 and save $50 per lawyer (some conditions apply) (Jan. 4, 2017)

You can choose to pay your 2017 premium for your professional liability insurance in a lump sum, or by quarterly or monthly instalments. But only lump sum payments, made by cheque or pre-authorized bank account withdrawal, qualify you for the $50 per lawyer early payment discount.

To benefit from the early payment discount ($54 per insured lawyer from the invoiced amount – $50 for the discount and $4 for PST), you must pay the premium indicated on your invoice in full by cheque, dated and received by LAWPRO on or before February 7, 2017. Please note that paying in a lump sum by credit card does NOT qualify for the early payment discount.

Please ensure that you remit the total premium amount as indicated on the premium Invoice, and not the amount indicated on the Declarations page, as that amount does not include the claims history levy surcharge (if applicable) or the PST. Your cheque should be made payable to The Law Society of Upper Canada and mailed to LAWPRO at 250 Yonge Street, Suite 3101, P.O. Box 3, Toronto, Ontario M5B 2L7. Please DO NOT include payments for Law Society membership fees in your mail to LAWPRO.

For further information, please contact our Customer Service Department at (416) 598-5899 or 1-800-410-1013; by fax at (416) 599-8341 or 1-800-286-7639; or by e-mail at [email protected]

Important information regarding payment of real estate transaction levy surcharge

The Law Society announced March 17, 2005, that the title insurers listed below (all title insurers licensed to do business in Ontario) have now provided to the Law Society their release and indemnity protection in favour of Ontario lawyers and law firms, in a form satisfactory to the Law Society.

  • Chicago Title Insurance Company
  • FCT Insurance Company Ltd
  • First Canadian Title (First American Title Insurance Company)
  • Land America (Lawyers Title Insurance Company)
  • Stewart Title Guaranty Company (Stewart International)
  • St. Paul Guarantee Insurance Company
  • TitlePLUS (Lawyers' Professional Indemnity Company)

In September 2004, The Law Society of Upper Canada approved a change to its insurance program for 2005 to ensure that lawyers are more consistently protected against claims arising out of title-insured transactions. Under the change, the release and indemnity protection provided by title insurers to Law Society members in accordance with the Real Estate Transaction Levy Surcharge provisions of the Law Society's professional liability insurance program must be in a form satisfactory to the Law Society for the real estate transaction levy to be waived.

Implementation of the change, originally scheduled to have taken effect January 1, 2005, was deferred to April 1, 2005, allowing time for the Law Society to work with the title insurers to agree upon an appropriate form of the release and indemnity protection.

With the release and indemnity in place, the $50 real estate transaction levy surcharge will continue to be waived for real estate transactions where one or more of the aforementioned title insurers has issued a title insurance policy(ies) in favour of all of the transferees and chargees obtaining an interest in or charge against the land which is the subject of the transaction, provided the lawyer is not also acting for the transferor in respect of the transaction and the other usual levy requirements are met.
