Definitions


Nature of practice

spacer SOLE PRACTITIONER

A lawyer in private practice who practises law on his/her own without lawyer or NON-LAWYER PARTNERs, lawyer associates or employed lawyers and who does not practise in a LAW CORPORATION. Lawyers who share a firm name or letterhead, or whose name appears on letterhead with the name(s) of other lawyers, are not considered SOLE PRACTITIONER(S) for the purposes of the insurance program.

LAW CORPORATION - Sole
A professional LAW CORPORATION, in accordance with the Business Corporations Act and By-law 34 of the Law Society Act, in which a lawyer practises as a SOLE PRACTITIONER.

LAW CORPORATION - Not Sole
A professional LAW CORPORATION, in accordance with the Business Corporations Act and By-law 34 of the Law Society Act, in which more than one lawyer acts in private practice.

Association
Lawyers in private practice affiliated with other practising lawyers (e.g. share services, space and/or whose names appear on joint letterhead), other than in a LAW CORPORATION or partnership.

Partnership - General
A LAW PARTNERSHIP, in accordance with the Partnerships Act and the Law Society Act, other than a MULTI-DISCIPLINE PARTNERSHIP or a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), in which more than one lawyer acts in private practice.

Partnership - Multi-Discipline Practice (MDP)
A MULTI-DISCIPLINE PARTNERSHIP with non-member(s), in accordance with By-Law 7 of the Law Society Act, in which one or more lawyers acts in private practice. LAWPRO® will contact your firm concerning an application for the non-lawyer members in your MULTI-DISCIPLINE PARTNERSHIP .

Partnership - Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)
A Limited Liability Partnership in accordance with the Partnerships Act and By-Law 26 of the Law Society Act, in which more than one lawyer acts in private practice.

In-house Corporate Counsel
Lawyers employed as counsel by a single corporation other than a LAW CORPORATION or a government corporation, and not employed as a teacher.

Employed, other
Lawyers employed in government, education and other lawyers employed as counsel not in private practice, but other than In-House Corporate Counsel.

Criminal law
Criminal law is considered to be legal services provided in connection with the actual or potential prosecution of individuals, municipalities and government for alleged breaches of federal or provincial statutes or municipal by-laws, generally viewed as criminal or quasi-criminal.

Immigration law
Immigration law is considered to be the practice of law dealing with any and all matters arising out of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (S.C. 2001, c. 27 ) and Regulations, and procedures and policies pertaining thereto, including admissions, removals, enforcement, refugee determination, citizenship, review and appellate remedies, including the application of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Bill of Rights.
