Part-time Practice Option

Eligibility LAWYERS in private practice and LAWYERS on exemption who opt for the standard coverage (and pay the related insurance premium) may qualify for this option. This option is available in 2012 only to part-time practitioners who, in their fiscal years commencing in 2011 and in 2012:
  1. restrict their law practice to 20 hours per week on average for each week actually worked and 750 hours per year, of professional time in private practice (including time for undocketed work); and
  2. have gross billings of $75,000 per year or less.
Also, the LAWYER cannot have reported a CLAIM under the LAWPRO liability insurance program with a repair and/or an indemnity payment made in the last five years.
Coverage & conditions

Qualifying LAWYERS are provided with the base program coverage.

  1. For in-house corporate counsel, hours of professional time and gross billings means that which concerns third parties outside of the EMPLOYER group only.
  2. If you have qualified for this option but subsequently exceed the eligibility criteria, you will lose the part-time designation and your premium and other terms of insurance will be amended retroactively to the inception date of the POLICY.
  3. When applying for this option, LAWYERS are not required to consider hours of professional time spent in providing PRO BONO SERVICES (through an approved pro bono PROFESSIONAL SERVICES program) or CLAIMS relating solely to these approved PRO BONO SERVICES.

    Professional time includes all time devoted by the LAWYER to the practice of law in Ontario and other provinces of Canada, including time spent, for example:
    • in private practice;
    • attending to office administration;
    • providing volunteer PRO BONO SERVICES (except pro bono PROFESSIONAL SERVICES provided through a LAWPRO-approved program associated with Pro Bono Law Ontario);
    • attending legal education programs during business hours;
    • on board related activities, if acting as a LAWYER; and
    • travelling in your capacity as a LAWYER.

    Professional time does not include time spent on continuing education courses or as a board director, or time devoted to business development or social time with clients.
Premium Qualifying LAWYERS are eligible for a discount equal to 50% of the base premium.
