New Claims Coordinator

Job Title: New Claims Coordinator

Reporting to: Administration Manager / Unit Director & Counsel (New Claims Unit)

The Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company (“LAWPRO”) provides malpractice insurance to lawyers and certain other professionals.  The New Claims Coordinator (“NCC”) is the first point of contact for insureds who report claims to LAWPRO or who require information about reporting claims.  The NCC’s primary functions include:

  • responding to verbal and written inquiries from insureds and others, including inquiries from insureds who are seeking guidance regarding their reporting obligations and regarding how to report a claim; and
  • reviewing and processing claim reports prior to the assignment of the reports to a Claims Professional.

In connection with these primary functions, the NCC regularly performs the following tasks:

  • assessing whether communications constitute claim reports (as distinct from requests for practice advice or other types of requests);
  • assessing whether the person who is purporting to report the claim has standing to do so;
  • assessing whether a claim report requires urgent attention;
  • determining whether the person reporting the claim has provided sufficient information pertaining to the claim, and if not, requesting additional information;
  • setting up an electronic file for each claim report;
  • determining the area of practice pertaining to the claim (e.g., real estate, litigation, family, etc.) and whether the insured has been sued, and coding the electronic file accordingly;
  • running computer searches to determine whether the claim in question has already been reported (i.e., is the claim a duplicate?) and whether the claim is related to any other pre-existing claims;
  • looking up information regarding an insured’s insurance coverage; and,
  • liaising with other employees, including members of other LAWPRO departments.

The NCC works in a fast-paced environment.  While the NCC works closely with senior members of LAWPRO’s claims team, the NCC performs most tasks independently.
