By-Law 7.1
By-Law 7.1 requires lawyers to follow certain client identification and verification procedures when retained by a client. The By-Law also requires lawyers to keep a record of the information and documents obtained to identify and verify the identity of clients. To assist you in meeting your obligations, we provide the following information:
LAWPRO is a wholly Canadian owned insurance company, incorporated in Ontario as corporation no. 883121 (issued at Toronto) and provides lawyers’ professional liability insurance and TitlePLUS title insurance. In addition to the undersigned (or another individual specified by LAWPRO), Dan Pinnington, President and CEO is authorized to provide instructions in this matter. If in the course of your retainer, it becomes necessary to meet the client identification and verification requirements of clauses 23 (2) and (4) of By-Law 7.1, the requisite information can be found at the LAWPRO Defence Counsel Extranet at https://counsel.lawpro.ca/ in the Claims Department – Identity Verification section.
Please note that this letter and the Defence Counsel Extranet are not intended to address all responsibilities you may have under By-Law 7.1, but solely to assist you in meeting certain of those responsibilities in connection with you acting for LAWPRO. It is suggested that the by-law be thoroughly reviewed and advice or guidance be sought as necessary from the Law Society of Ontario and/or your own firm’s Counsel.
