Job Title: Articling Positions 2015-2016: Reporting to Articling Principal

The Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company is offering two articling positions in Toronto for the 2015-2016 articling term.

The Articling Students will be assigned a mentor who will co-ordinate assignments and provide assistance and feedback. The articling program offers experience in the Claims Department for part of the year, with the balance spent in the Office of the General Counsel.

Some areas that the student will be responsible for are:

-legal research and memoranda on all areas of law, with an emphasis on solicitors’ risk management and liability and real estate law

-assisting legal counsel with pleadings, research, motions, and trial preparation

-preparing arbitration briefs and representing LAWPRO at arbitrations

-attendance at client meetings, pre-trial conferences, mediations, discoveries and trial

-assisting the TitlePLUS department with the underwriting of title insurance policies

-assisting LAWPRO Executive and Counsel with corporate, legal, compliance, communication and strategic risk matters

-participation in a comprehensive orientation program

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • Be a law school graduate with excellent grades;
  • Have strong research, writing, and presentation skills;
  • Be conversant with MS Office and Westlaw;
  • Be energetic, detail-oriented, and consistently successful at meeting deadlines

Job Title: Claims Counsel - Primary Professional Liability Claims Department: Reporting to Unit Director & Counsel

We are currently seeking one Claims Counsel to join the LAWPRO claims team. This is a permanent position in LAWPRO’S Primary Professional Liability Claims Department which presents the successful candidate with an excellent opportunity to handle interesting and challenging cases in a variety of areas of law.

LAWPRO Claims Counsel interact with insured lawyers in investigating, evaluating, and resolving errors and omissions claims against them. They manage these claims in-house or direct external legal counsel and professionals in resolving them.

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • have four or more years of experience in civil litigation, corporate/commercial, wills & estates, and / or real estate. In-house insurance industry experience would be an asset;
  • be able to identify and implement file strategy in conjunction with external counsel and the insured, and revise strategy where necessary to achieve desired outcome;
  • take a proactive and creative approach to claims handling;
  • be keen to develop expertise in many areas of law, including insurance coverage;
  • have strong organizational skills and the ability to meet demanding deadlines;
  • make effective use of technology;
  • be licensed and in good standing as a lawyer in Canada
  • embrace the vision, values and goals for the company as a whole;
  • French language skills would be an asset;

Job Title: IS Business Analyst (Contract): Reporting to Project Manager
(Contract (12 months))

The role of the Business Analyst involves internal business research and analysis for all departments in LAWPRO. The Business Analyst will work with key members of each department and under the direction of the Systems Department to assess current business processes and identify areas of improvement and streamlining. Key activities for the successful applicant will include:

- preparing business specifications

- developing mock-up designs of new functionality or systems

- designing, co-ordinating and/or executing test plans

- preparing and reviewing project status reports, releases notes and documentation

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • Mandatory experience to include:
  • practical knowledge and appreciation of the legal and/or insurance industry
  • knowledge of Agile project management principles, practices, techniques, and tools
  • knowledge and understanding of business research principles, processes, and techniques
  • ability to develop and prepare business analyses and plans, and appreciation for user interface and database design
  • broad interest and experience in office technology, including experience with the Microsoft Office suite, workflow productivity tools, and the Internet
  • ability to develop and deliver presentations and training materials
  • proven experience in working collaboratively with people of different backgrounds and technical abilities
  • the ability to learn and adapt quickly
  • excellent attention to detail and time management skills
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

Job Title: PracticePRO Counsel: Reporting to Vice President Claims Prevention and Stakeholder Relations

Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company (LAWPRO®) is looking for a dynamic and resourceful team player for our practicePRO program, our internationally recognized risk management and claims prevention initiative. As PracticePRO Counsel you will develop, implement and support all aspects of practicePRO operations.

Responsibilities:

•Developing content on claims prevention and law practice management issues for LAWPRO and third-party publications, websites and blogs;

•Developing and creating risk management tools, checklists and resources;

•Attending at CPD programs, conferences, law firms and other events as a presenter and/or exhibitor;

•Actively participating in social media channels;

•Maintaining relationships with key contacts through active participation in bar associations and with other stakeholders;

•Liaising with claims professionals and other LAWPRO staff for information on claims issues and trends;

•Traveling and attending at evening or weekend events as required.

Job Location: Downtown Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • Have five or more years experience in practice, with exposure to a variety of practice areas preferred;
  • Be licensed and in good standing as a lawyer in Ontario;
  • Have excellent oral and written communications skills and superlative presentation skills;
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of legal technology and law practice management issues and topics;
  • Have advanced office technology skills and be an active participant in social media;
  • Be self-directed, well organized and able to juggle competing priorities and deadlines.
