Job Title: Articling Positons - 2016/2017: Reporting to Articling Principal

The Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company is offering two articling positions in Toronto for the 2016-2017 articling term.

Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company (LAWPRO®), a licensed insurance company wholly owned by the Law Society of Upper Canada, provides professional liability insurance to all practising Ontario lawyers. LAWPRO arranges for the legal defence of insured lawyers against whom an action has been commenced. LAWPRO also provides title insurance across Canada through its web-based TitlePLUS program, and optional run-off and excess professional liability insurance for lawyers.

The articling students complete two rotations in the LAWPRO articling program: one in each of the Primary Professional Liability Claims Department and the Office of the General Counsel. The Articling Students will be assigned a mentor in each rotation who will co-ordinate assignments and provide assistance and feedback.

The articling student will be responsible for:

-legal research and memoranda on all areas of law, with an emphasis on solicitors’ risk management and liability

-assisting legal counsel with pleadings, research, motions, and trial preparation

-preparing arbitration briefs and representing LAWPRO at arbitrations

-attendance at client meetings, pre-trial conferences, mediations, discoveries and trial

-assisting LAWPRO Executive and in-house counsel with corporate matters related to legal, compliance, underwriting and risk

-legal research and memoranda related to real estate law as it pertains to underwriting TitlePLUS title insurance

-assisting with researching and drafting articles and papers for publication and/or external presentation

-participation in a comprehensive orientation program

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • Be a law school graduate with excellent grades;
  • Have strong research, writing, and presentation skills;
  • Be conversant with MS Office and Westlaw;
  • Be energetic, detail-oriented, and consistently successful at meeting deadlines

Job Title: Compliance Coordinator: Reporting to General Counsel & Chief Privacy Officer
(Permanent Full Time)

The role of the Compliance Coordinator is to provide services to the Office of the General Counsel to assist LAWPRO in meeting a variety of compliance and regulatory obligations. This position will be of interest to a team player who demonstrates initiative and wants to contribute in a results-oriented fashion towards all LAWPRO departments meeting the company’s compliance goals. There are a broad range of challenges offered, as the position includes preparation of process documents, maintaining records to document compliance, and liaising with all departments in the company in order to implement various regulatory/corporate compliance programs. There will be a particular emphasis on records management, business continuity and document accessibility compliance.

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • have completed a Community College/University program;
  • have prior relevant experience in a professional environment, with compliance-related experience preferred;
  • have an exceptionally strong attention to detail;
  • have a demonstrated ability to work well with others in a collaborative fashion;
  • have excellent drafting and oral communication skills;
  • have experience working in a high volume environment with many deadlines;
  • be proactive in his/her approach to work, with the ability to set priorities independently and to organize and implement projects;
  • demonstrate a high level of discretion and tact when handling confidential information; and
  • have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Lotus Notes, including database management.

Job Title: Lead Programmer/Analyst: Reporting to Software Development Manager
(Permanent full-time)

We are looking for an experienced Java developer to join our Agile software development team at LAWPRO as a Lead Programmer/Analyst. This exciting role will be central to the enhancement of our in-house policy and claims management system, and our online applications. In addition to outstanding technical skills and imagination, we are looking for an individual who understands and can relate to business users and issues in a fast-paced, professional environment. Customer focus, superior communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities at the same time are essential.

Job Location: Downtown Toronto, Ontario

The ideal candidate should:

  • 10+ years related experience in development of Java-based applications
  • True mastery of core Java concepts and programming paradigms
  • A desire to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Fluency in object-oriented design, analysis and programming techniques
  • The ability to analyze, translate, and define complex business requirements into efficient technical solutions
  • A pragmatic, results-oriented approach to software development, with a track record of delivering business value to the organization
  • A demonstrated attention to detail, superior communication and organizational skills, ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work on multiple concurrent projects effectively individually and in a team
  • Proficiency in programming fundamentals and their implementation in Java, including threading, concurrency, data structures & algorithms
  • Proficiency in the latest and greatest features in the Java language and the Java platform
  • A deepunderstanding of unit testing including JUnit and mocking libraries
  • Experience with Java web development including JavaEE, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS, and web application frameworks such as Grails or MEAN
  • Experience with relational databases like MySQL and Java database persistence
  • An understanding of JavaFX or Swing-based GUI development would be an asset
  • A post-secondary diploma/degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field
  • Excellent communications skills in English, with French language as a key differentiator.

Job Title: Project Manager: Reporting to Chief Information Officer
(Contract)

Works closely with the business units and Systems team to gather and document requirements

Manages timelines and all deliverables associated with the projects

Reports in a structured fashion on all activities related to the projects

Works closely with the software development team and the business units, successfully plan, control and deliver project work within defined scope and budget

Ensures that appropriate corporate software development governance processes are followed

Continually monitors resource capacity and schedules for projects to ensure the feasibility of timely project delivery

Continually communicates with the Systems team, business units, and executive management on project status and future project roadmaps

Manages impact of changes on priority, resources, and scope, on current and planned projects

  • Familiar with traditional “waterfall” and Agile project management techniques

  • Has a solid understanding of technology, software and IT projects

Job Title: Underwriting Policy Development Counsel: Reporting to Vice President, TitlePLUS
(Permanent full-time)

LAWPRO is seeking an Underwriting Policy Development Counsel for its TitlePLUS program, to build on the team’s record of effective underwriting, claims analysis and pursuit of best practices. The successful candidate must be a strong team player who is committed to adding value in a positive, collegial environment and is looking for an opportunity to use their legal skills in support of the TitlePLUS program, and in assisting the real estate Bar across Canada.

Responsibilities will include:

Development of underwriting policy and coverage proposals as requested and approved by Vice President, TitlePLUS and President & CEO, LAWPRO;

Allocating work time in accordance with company priorities;

Coverage analysis and policy drafting;

Preparation and review of TitlePLUS claims and business reports, and participation in analysis of claims for the TitlePLUS program;

Consultation on procedural and due diligence requirements for TitlePLUS programs;

Working with TitlePLUS Technology Coordinator on software requirements for programs;

Acting as a resource for special projects;

Being proactive in performing Underwriting Counsel work and time on the phone queue as required.

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • Be called to the Bar in Ontario, and in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada;
  • Have the legal knowledge and ability to make underwriting decisions as authorized for TitlePLUS Underwriting Counsel in the TitlePLUS Standards of Sound Business;
  • Have excellent knowledge of LAWPRO and TitlePLUS technology systems;
  • Have excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word;
  • Have extensive knowledge of TitlePLUS underwriting and coverage;
  • Be detail-oriented, but aware of “big picture” considerations;
  • Be willing to develop knowledge of real estate law and practice in all Canadian jurisdictions;
  • Have well developed written and verbal communications skills;
  • Be self-directed and well organized, able to set priorities and meet deadlines;
  • Have the ability to work in a team environment, and be a good listener;
  • Work from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. weekly or more often as required to accommodate subscribers in all Canadian jurisdictions
  • Work extra hours from time to time when there are important deadlines.
