Job Title: Articling Positions - 2017/2018: Reporting to Articling Principal

The Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company is offering two articling positions in Toronto for the 2017-2018 articling term.

Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company (LAWPRO®), a licensed insurance company wholly owned by the Law Society of Upper Canada, provides professional liability insurance to all practising Ontario lawyers. LAWPRO arranges for the legal defence of insured lawyers against whom an action has been commenced. LAWPRO also provides title insurance across Canada through its web-based TitlePLUS program, and optional run-off and excess professional liability insurance for lawyers.

The articling students complete two rotations in the LAWPRO articling program: one in each of the Primary Professional Liability Claims Department and the Office of the General Counsel. The Articling Students will be assigned a mentor in each rotation who will co-ordinate assignments and provide assistance and feedback.

The articling student will be responsible for:

-legal research and memoranda on all areas of law, with an emphasis on solicitors’ risk management and liability;

-assisting legal counsel with pleadings, research, motions, and trial preparation;

-preparing arbitration briefs and representing LAWPRO at arbitrations;

-attendance at client meetings, pre-trial conferences, mediations, discoveries and trial;

-assisting LAWPRO Executive and in-house counsel with corporate matters related to legal, compliance, underwriting and risk;

-legal research and memoranda related to real estate law as it pertains to underwriting TitlePLUS title insurance;

-assisting with researching and drafting articles and papers for publication and/or external presentation;

-participation in a comprehensive orientation program.

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • Be a law school graduate with excellent grades;
  • Have strong research, writing, and presentation skills;
  • Be conversant with MS Office and Westlaw;
  • Be energetic, detail-oriented, and consistently successful at meeting deadlines.

Job Title: Corporate Administrative Coordinator: Reporting to Manager Corporate Secretariat & Services
(Full-Time Permanent)

The Corporate Administrative Coordinator reports to the Manager, Corporate Secretariat & Services and will provide administrative support to the Office of the President, the Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel. This role will be responsible for, but not limited to, filing, operating electronic diary systems, arranging meetings, sorting mail, updating and maintaining databases, scanning, photocopying/collating, producing accessible electronic documents (AODA) and/or uploading meeting materials for distribution. This position will also be required to support event management and arrange travel from time to time. The successful candidate will be a flexible team player with a highly professional demeanour who demonstrates initiative and wants to contribute in a results-oriented fashion towards the efficient operations of the department and LAWPRO more broadly. It is essential that the successful candidate be very detail-oriented, organized and able to complete workflow processes accurately.

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • have prior administrative experience in an office setting preferably with executives or professionals;
  • have formal training in administrative skills, with a Community College/University graduate preferred;
  • have good knowledge of all Microsoft Office software with a minimum Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Word;
  • have excellent knowledge of Lotus Notes, including database management;
  • have excellent time management and organizational skills;
  • have experience working in a team environment with many deadlines and a high volume of work;
  • be proactive in his/her approach to work, with the ability to set priorities independently; and
  • demonstrate absolute discretion and tact when handling confidential information.

It is preferred that the candidate:

    have experience working with Board portal systems (such as Diligent Boards);

Job Title: IT Security Specialist: Reporting to Chief Information Officer
(Permanent, Full-Time)

LAWPRO has an immediate opening for an IT Security Specialist. Reporting to the CIO, the successful applicant in this new, permanent role will be responsible for helping to develop a dedicated IT security practice at the company.

Key Responsibilities:

-maintain an information security governance framework, including:

-define and document approved and effective governance processes

-establish and maintain information security policies and standards

-support business functions in security policy implementation

-implement and monitor of security compliance tools and processes

-provide executive management a view of the information security risk posture and profile recommending areas of focus based on current and emerging threats

-establish priorities and long term objectives on the basis of information security risk

-develop and implement strategies to reduce the overall risk exposure of the company, inline with our corporate risk appetite

-maintain and test corporate security awareness programs and security incident management plans and processes

-stay up to date on trends and issues and communicate to leadership security issues and recommendations in clear business terms

-partner with departmental management to ensure business needs are met from a security perspective without compromising the company’s security requirements

-partner with general counsel to establish appropriate information security terms and conditions to be included within third party contracts

-perform information risk assessments to identify and communicate security risks

-perform an advisory role in application development or acquisition projects to assess and audit security requirements and controls

-develop and validate baseline security configurations for operating systems, applications, and networking and telecommunications equipment

-perform controland compliance and vulnerability assessments (inclusive of third parties) to identify, assess, and remediate potential control weaknesses

-work with internal and external auditors to assess security controls

Job Location: Downtown Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • have a minimum of six years working in the security technology field
  • have a track record of success in developing and implementing IT security risk practices
  • have a post-secondary diploma/degree in have a relevant field
  • current security accreditation (e.g., CISSP, CISM or GSEC)
  • have a deep understanding of information security standards, frameworks, and best practices (e.g., ISO 27000, ITIL, CoBIT, SANS, etc.)
  • have a demonstrated ability and passion to learn new technologies
  • have excellent planning, collaboration and relationship-building skills
  • have outstanding written, verbal, and presentation skills in English
