Job Title: Claims Administrator: Reporting to Unit Director & Counsel
(Permanent – Full Time, 2 positions)

We’re looking for skilled administrative professionals to join our team in the role of the Claims Administrator. The Claims Administrator carries out prescribed claims administrative work on assigned claim files, provides claims support, provides occasional reception relief and assists with other projects and initiatives within the claims team and/or company as may be assigned from time to time in an appropriate, timely and efficient way.

An integral part of the claims handling team, the Claims Administrator must demonstrate independence and initiative in contributing towards the results-oriented operation of the claims team.

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • have prior related work experience, preferably in a legal or insurance environment;
  • have sound time management skills, be able to prioritize competing priorities and manage own assignments;
  • possess superior attention to detail and be proficient in proofreading;
  • have experience with preparing correspondence (e.g. using precedent documents, dictation) and memoranda;
  • set up and maintain claim files including account reconciliation;
  • handle incoming electronic mail, calls and schedule meetings;
  • have demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing with tact and diplomacy with both internal and external contacts at all levels;
  • have good knowledge of Microsoft Office software package and a high level of expertise with various computer programs;
  • have experience working in a team environment.

Job Title: Claims Counsel - Primary Professional Liability Claims Department: Reporting to Unit Director & Counsel

We are currently seeking one Claims Counsel to join the LAWPRO claims team. This is a permanent position in LAWPRO’S Primary Professional Liability Claims Department which presents the successful candidate with an excellent opportunity to handle interesting and challenging cases in a variety of areas of law.

LAWPRO Claims Counsel interact with insured lawyers in investigating, evaluating, and resolving errors and omissions claims against them. They manage these claims in-house or direct external legal counsel and professionals in resolving them.

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • have four or more years of experience in civil litigation, corporate/commercial, wills & estates, and / or real estate. In-house insurance industry experience would be an asset;
  • be able to identify and implement file strategy in conjunction with external counsel and the insured, and revise strategy where necessary to achieve desired outcome;
  • take a proactive and creative approach to claims handling;
  • be keen to develop expertise in many areas of law, including insurance coverage;
  • have strong organizational skills and the ability to meet demanding deadlines;
  • make effective use of technology;
  • be licensed and in good standing as a lawyer in Canada
  • embrace the vision, values and goals for the company as a whole;
  • French language skills would be an asset;

Job Title: Unit Director & Counsel: Reporting to VP, Primary Professional Claims

LAWPRO is recruiting for a Unit Director & Counsel position. This important leadership position will be responsible for the professional and administrative management of a claims unit within the Primary Professional Liability Claims Department. The unit is comprised of Claims Counsel and Senior Claims Counsel who investigate, evaluate, and resolve claims against lawyers in a wide variety of areas of law through internal claims handling and instruction of external counsel.

The current opportunity is for a Unit Director & Counsel in the New Claims Unit which handles claims where the lawyer has not yet been sued. These claims require early intervention by Claims Counsel in the unit and possibly repair efforts by external counsel. File assignment and reallocation is an important aspect of this position to manage file count as well as leverage in-house expertise in various areas of practice.

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • Be a member in good standing with the bar in Ontario or elsewhere in Canada;
  • Have relevant practice experience and excellent legal knowledge;
  • Have a minimum ten years experience with insurance related claims, including claims involving large dollar amounts, significant complexity and the work of senior external counsel;
  • Have management experience, including such functions as recruitment, coaching and performance management;
  • Have a positive customer service attitude and demonstrated ability to work well with other internal and external stakeholders;
  • Have exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build a positive team environment;
  • Have strong organization and prioritization skills as well as a demonstrated ability to creatively resolve issues;
  • Have a good working knowledge of a wide variety of technology tools as well as the capacity to quickly adopt new technology tools.
