Job Title: Articling Positons - 2016/2017: Reporting to Articling Principal

The Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company is offering two articling positions in Toronto for the 2016-2017 articling term.

Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company (LAWPRO®), a licensed insurance company wholly owned by the Law Society of Upper Canada, provides professional liability insurance to all practising Ontario lawyers. LAWPRO arranges for the legal defence of insured lawyers against whom an action has been commenced. LAWPRO also provides title insurance across Canada through its web-based TitlePLUS program, and optional run-off and excess professional liability insurance for lawyers.

The articling students complete two rotations in the LAWPRO articling program: one in each of the Primary Professional Liability Claims Department and the Office of the General Counsel. The Articling Students will be assigned a mentor in each rotation who will co-ordinate assignments and provide assistance and feedback.

The articling student will be responsible for:

-legal research and memoranda on all areas of law, with an emphasis on solicitors’ risk management and liability

-assisting legal counsel with pleadings, research, motions, and trial preparation

-preparing arbitration briefs and representing LAWPRO at arbitrations

-attendance at client meetings, pre-trial conferences, mediations, discoveries and trial

-assisting LAWPRO Executive and in-house counsel with corporate matters related to legal, compliance, underwriting and risk

-legal research and memoranda related to real estate law as it pertains to underwriting TitlePLUS title insurance

-assisting with researching and drafting articles and papers for publication and/or external presentation

-participation in a comprehensive orientation program

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • Be a law school graduate with excellent grades;
  • Have strong research, writing, and presentation skills;
  • Be conversant with MS Office and Westlaw;
  • Be energetic, detail-oriented, and consistently successful at meeting deadlines

Job Title: Lead System Administrator: Reporting to Director, Security and Operations

We are looking for a Lead System Administrator to expand our Operations team at LAWPRO. Working under the direction of the Director Security and Operations, the LSA will co-ordinate the responsibilities of the network and web administration team. This will include leading and/or participating in infrastructure projects, day-to-day operations and end user support The Lead System Administrator will lead in the provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, support, maintenance, documentation, and/or retirement of system hardware, software and related infrastructure. While not a management position, the Lead System Administrator will provide guidance, leadership, and project management oversight for the technical staff in the Operations Group. This opportunity will also involve a wide variety of challenges, ranging from end user support to participating in larger-scale projects. In addition to outstanding technical skills and imagination, we are looking for an individual who understands and can relate to business users and issues. Customer focus, superior communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities at the same time are essential.

  • Mandatory experience and qualifications to include:
  • in-depth experience with current Windows PC and server configuration and maintenance
  • in-depth experience with Active Directory, Group Policy administration
  • in-depth knowledge of technology backup tools, administration and configuration
  • in-depth experience with server virtualization and storage area network technology
  • in-depth experience with application virtualization technology
  • SQL client/server database and connectivity interfacing experience
  • knowledge of VOIP technology
  • knowledge of mobile device management tools and techniques
  • knowledge of hardware repair and replacement
  • knowledge of web technology and Web server administration

Job Title: TitlePLUS Administrative Assistant: Reporting to Client Service Manager
(Permanent full-time)

TitlePLUS provides business and support systems for real estate lawyers including title insurance, value-added products and related software packages.

We require an administrative assistant to support the TitlePLUS area and its Vice President, and to assist in the preparation of documents, reports and general administration of the department. This role will also review mail, process subscription agreements, provide customer service on the phone queue, book meetings, make travel arrangements, assist with packaging and mailing materials, maintain the department records (electronic and paper), draft correspondence, etc.

Job Location:

The ideal candidate should:

  • have extensive knowledge of and proficiency in computers including Windows, Word, Excel, presentation packages and internal administrative systems;
  • have outstanding organizational skills and the ability to prioritize, and be a self-starter with regard to daily tasks;
  • have excellent written and spoken communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with members of the real estate bar;
  • have an exceptional attention to detail and the accuracy of information including statistics, and good quantitative skills; and
  • have superior interpersonal skills;
  • have a knowledge of title insurance and general real estate/legal concepts and practices;
  • have a community college or university education, with business, legal or real estate courses.
