Job Title: Articling Positions 2015-2016: Reporting to Articling Principal

The Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company is offering two articling positions in Toronto for the 2015-2016 articling term.

The Articling Students will be assigned a mentor who will co-ordinate assignments and provide assistance and feedback. The articling program offers experience in the Claims Department for part of the year, with the balance spent in the Office of the General Counsel.

Some areas that the student will be responsible for are:

-legal research and memoranda on all areas of law, with an emphasis on solicitors’ risk management and liability and real estate law

-assisting legal counsel with pleadings, research, motions, and trial preparation

-preparing arbitration briefs and representing LAWPRO at arbitrations

-attendance at client meetings, pre-trial conferences, mediations, discoveries and trial

-assisting the TitlePLUS department with the underwriting of title insurance policies

-assisting LAWPRO Executive and Counsel with corporate, legal, compliance, communication and strategic risk matters

-participation in a comprehensive orientation program

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • Be a law school graduate with excellent grades;
  • Have strong research, writing, and communication skills;
  • Be conversant with MS Office and Westlaw;

Job Title: Claims Prevention and practicePRO Counsel: Reporting to Vice President Claims Prevention & Stakeholder Relations

LAWPRO® is looking for a lawyer who is passionate about helping Ontario lawyers and paralegals avoid malpractice claims and succeed in the practice of law. This is a high profile opportunity for a dynamic individual who wants to bring change to the legal profession. You will become the public face and engine behind the practicePRO® program, our internationally recognized risk management and claims prevention initiative. This position reports to LAWPRO’s Vice President, Claims Prevention and Stakeholder Relations.

You will be responsible for:

•Ensuring the practicePRO message is heard by Ontario lawyers and paralegals through in-person, print and electronic channels

•Representing LAWPRO and delivering practicePRO content at CPD programs and conferences throughout Ontario

•Liaising and collaborating with both individuals and groups that are key LAWPRO stakeholders

•Writing interesting content on claims trends and issues affecting the legal profession

•Creating compelling risk management tools, checklists and resources

•Supporting electronic outreach efforts on our websites, the AvoidAClaim blog and social media channels

Job Location: Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • Have five or more years’ experience in legal practice
  • Have excellent oral and written communications skills and superlative presentation skills

Job Title: Director of Security & Operations: Reporting to Chief Information Officer
(permanent full-time)

The Director of Security & Operations is accountable for the secure and stable management of LAWPRO’s digital assets and information system environment. Key elements of the position will involve the management and mitigation of information security risk, and the continuous improvement of LAWPRO’s governance structure for safeguarding data. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, this new management role will lead a small team of IT professionals.

Job Location: Downtown Toronto

The ideal candidate should:

  • Working with senior management, develop strategies for the maintenance and growth of LAWPRO’s information system environment to anticipate evolving corporate needs
  • Lead the implementation and enforcement of strategies, procedures, policies and technologies that will maintain and protect corporate digital assets
  • Develop and maintain security and technology standards in accordance with regulatory guidelines and evolving best practices, and to respond to emerging security threats
  • Enforce and enhance technology and process change control procedures
  • Assist in the development of programs that will identify and classify critical assets and operational procedures, and implement risk mitigation procedures to safeguard operations
  • Participate in system and software architecture planning sessions to predict and identify security risks, and ensure adherence to security policies during development and in production
  • Lead security assessments for technology upgrades and implementations to identify and mitigate risk
  • Promote corporate security awareness and training programs for all staff
  • Work collaboratively with staff, management, consultants, and internal and external auditors to identify and mitigate information security risks
  • Participate in the maintenance and testing of the corporate business continuity plan
  • Participate in company’s formal incident response plan; manage and document all information security related incidents
  • Lead cloud, managed service, and VAR risk assessments
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ten years of relevant professional experience
  • Extensive current information security knowledge and proven track record for managing security and operations
  • Passion for continuing education in technology and security
  • Proven leadership and project management
  • Experience managing staff
  • Outstanding communication and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with interpreting and finding practical solutions to address industry and regulatory guidelines and standards
  • Experience implementing and managing advanced security systems (e.g., Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems, Data Loss Prevention, extended user authentication, encryption, unified log analysis, perimeter security, anti-spyware/anti-malware, etc.)
  • Experience with BYOD program definition and implementation
  • Experience with hosted and cloud-based security issues and challenges

The Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity company is a Toronto-based, professional liability insurer with a mandate to provide quality insurance services to our insured lawyers. As part of achieving our mandate, we are currently recruiting for a Program Coordinator (Bilingual).

The role of the Program Coordinator (Bilingual) is to provide written and verbal information on the insurance program to the members of the legal profession, and to be the main point of contact for inquiries in French. The information the Program Coordinator provides includes: information concerning insurance coverages for the lawyer, account information on premiums, and information on additional programs such as risk management. The successful candidate will be a high calibre individual who will receive intensive training about the program and the Company before answering any calls from the public.

The successful candidate will manage the sale of TitlePLUS products throughout Canada.


•Sales visits, including monitoring of staff performance and management of relationships with key accounts;

•Developing and implementing strategic sales plans and concepts;

•Managing a team of four sales staff;

•Sales goal setting, results review and reporting;

•Providing support for marketing and product development, including working with the Claims Prevention & Stakeholder Relations Department;
